The Letter
of the Law
The following is and explanation of the legal system and how it
works in the City of Landers.
All crimes are submitted to the Master of the Inquisition. He does
a cursory investigation, and if things prove out a trail is put
on the docket.
At this point the Defender of the Accused is contacted, and give
all salient information on the case. He’ll do his own investigation
and prepare his case.
At this point, jurors are picked. Both the prosecution and the
defense must approve each juror. There are 12 jurors and a simple
majority arrives at every legal verdict. There is no need for a
unanimous verdict. While it’s mathematically possible to have
a hung jury, in such cases the Viceroy will be given the tie-braking
vote.
Hearsay evidence if not admissible. If you did not see something
happen, you cannot be a witness.
Any witness that knowingly gives perjured testimony is in Jeopardy
of being banished from the kingdom. The law is a very serious matter
and should not be attended with malice or a hidden agenda.
The office of the inquisition must be beyond reproach. If there
is any conflict of interest during the prosecution of a case, it
must be stated and recorded. The jury must be aware of any conflict
of interest and weight the case accordingly.
